If you click on my last post ( The Iris of Inspiration) you see that I ended with
rain rain, rain
don’t stay away for another day.
Because the drought was so severe that we had water rationing in California in the winter!
taken March 1st. Am not used to this gray-ness.
*
Well, my prayers (and that of others) were heard, because on Friday, the last day of Feb. it started raining on and off. At night I thought maybe to sleep with one eye open, because it poured like the sky was falling (a bit dramatic) .
*

News is that in the areas where there had been fires, the ground was loose, not being able to soak up and hold the rain. Too much water coming down the hills (the sewage system couldn’t hold it either) with a great threat of floods, caused a mandatory evacuation of several communities around Pasasdena, CA.
Also, individual mini dramas: a friend told us Sunday morning that he had to hurry to put sandbags around the apartment to reroute the water, so their place would not flood, because higher up a swimming pool had collapsed and was rushing down the hill with all the rain.
*
As common as rain is in my country of origin (Holland, like the UK), it is memorable here in California.
Freeways come to a grinding stop because people don’t know how to drive in the rain.
Even worse, they slow down to a stop for deep puddles (petpeeve of someone I know)

Hubby was on the phone with a friend from Pennsylvania today, March first,
and there they’ll get a foot of snow!
Sorry for the cold, you who live up North:(

A heart for Endive, Potatoes, & Bacon
*
My remedy against gray weather are the Eintopf (one-pot) dishes.
Although this is a very typical Dutch winter dish,
I like the German word, because it gives a visual image.
This one is mashed potatoes with thin strips of endive and bacon strips –
with Dyon mustard on the side for a little zip.
What could be simpler and more delicious?

*
not from this time of rain, but this rain puddle
in Sacramento was so wide, I had to choose a focus
*
*
*
I was happy though when the sun decided to break through the clouds:)
*
Update of Saturday of the same week. Have my doors open because it’s warmer
outside than inside and wearing flip flops:)

Morning Jesh,
I feel so badly for California with that rain–those floods, and the Northeast with so much snow. We’ve had drought conditions in Florida for several years, so I know the frustrations of that.
Happy Blue Monday!

Well, when you come out my way you better slow down for deep puddles because they like to hide mega car-eating potholes that will cost you a fortune if you hit one too quickly. So, if the person in front of you is from PA, have patience with them til they overcome the years of fear! 🙂

it’s because i like puddles:) Haven’t driven much in snow, but my experience is better with a car, than riding on a bike, lol!

Can’t have too much of this liquid gold as far as I’m concerned – unless it all comes in one huge deluge. We have had only 20% of the normal 10 inches we usually get. Thankfully, it did rain both of those day, but even the total was less than an inch. Love your azalea.

Rain isn’t common here in Colorado either, and it usually falls from heavy thunderstorms when it arrives. My country of origin is England, and I lived in rainy but beautiful Holland for 10 years!

I’m glad you finally got some needed rain. Personally, I’m glad drivers slow down before going through deep puddles. ;))

We’ve heard about your drought and then the onslaught on the rain! I was thinking you’d be in trouble with mud slides and such, so praying that doesn’t happen. I hope the earth sucks in all that water so the crops will be plentiful.

We were so happy to have the downpours up here in Northern California too.
We just hope there will be enough snow pack to fill the lakes so we don’t have mandatory rationing.

Living in the Seattle area we are used to driving in the rain. It’s always an experience to see how it effects driving in Southern California. Glad California finally got some rain.

Sounds like it’s gone from one extreme to another. The UK has had what is now the wettest winter on record. Some areas have experienced devastating flooding. Fortunately I live in an area not prone to flooding. I’d have been quite happy to send you some of my rain!!

So strange. You NEED rain, but not so much at once, particularly after the wildfires!

Hey — my 2 cents worth about putting your condo on the market
Statistically, March through June are the highest sales months, so hurry. And look for someone that sold LOTS of houses last year (in an urban-suburban area, that probably means 25 or more). A sophisticated tech platform and great quality pictures and hi-def video are essential.

Interesting to hear about how rain affects California. Here in Sweden we have a lot of it also, although at the moment we still have snow.

It is hard to get the right amount of rain. When there is a drought it seems common to have too much rain all at once and it can’t be soaked up.

Yep! We wanted rain and boy did we get it! It always kills me to see so much of the rainwater doesn’t get collected. I just heard on the news, that we may get some more rain in about 10 days.
Nice photos…

I’m so glad you linked up with Guest Heart Thursday! It’s so good to see you!!!!!!! I’ve heard California got some much needed rain, rather too much at once, though. We’ve had 2 days of wild wet and wind, but tomorrow it’s supposed to be dry. yay!
Your Eintopf looks delish – especially since it’s shaped like a heart :=}
But what I really noticed was on your last shot – the sky. At the top, there is a glowing outline of a dove! I know I have a good imagination (to see things in clouds), but it’s quite glorious!
