FEBRUARY ENDED with RAIN

If you click on my last post ( The Iris of Inspiration) you see that I ended with

rain rain, rain
don’t stay away for another day.

Because the drought was so severe that we had water rationing in California in the winter!

Well, my prayers (and that of others) were heard, because on Friday, the last day of Feb. it started raining on and off. At night I thought maybe to sleep with one eye open, because it poured like the sky was falling (a bit dramatic) .

News is that in the areas where there had been fires, the ground was loose, not being able to soak up and hold the rain. Too much water coming down the hills (the sewage system couldn’t hold it either) with a great threat of floods, caused a mandatory evacuation of several communities around Pasasdena, CA.

Also, individual mini dramas: a friend told us Sunday morning that he had to hurry to put sandbags around the apartment to reroute the water, so their place would not flood, because higher up a swimming pool had collapsed and was rushing down the hill with all the rain.

As common as rain is in my country of origin (Holland, like the UK), it is memorable here in California.
Freeways come to a grinding stop because people don’t know how to drive in the rain.
Even worse, they slow down to a stop for deep puddles (petpeeve  of someone I know)

Hubby was on the phone with a friend from Pennsylvania today, March first,
and there they’ll get a foot of snow!

A heart for Endive, Potatoes, & Bacon

*

My remedy against gray weather are the Eintopf (one-pot) dishes.
Although this is a very typical Dutch winter dish,
I like the German word,  because it gives a visual image.

This one is mashed potatoes with thin strips of endive and bacon strips –
with Dyon mustard on the side for a little zip.
What could be simpler and more delicious?

Update of Saturday of the same week. Have my doors open because it’s warmer
outside than inside and wearing flip flops:)
