ARTISANS – A Touch of the Past

Took these shots in the Open Air Museum near Arnhem, close to the border with Germany
and known for the movie “One Bridge too Far ‘ (movie about World War II).

This museum shows how Holland lived in the past.
In this post some of the old crafts, like the blacksmith above, shows how it’s done.
Most of these shorts were taken by hubby.
He is tall and could avoid getting other people in the pic:)

And where is the guy supposed to be working here –
taking a long lunch?

No, it’s not a gun in his back pocket, but a water bottle!

On the blackboard sign
One scoop of ice cream 2 Euro
2 scoops  for 3 Euro

Who doesn’t like ice cream? Ever so meticulous
and careful he put the scoop into the cone  – we thought
maybe it was his first day on the job🙂

*

The artisans of the past reminded me on that everyone in town used to know who the baker, the butcher, the farmer was. Now, life is so much more impersonal, and we often do not know our neighbor.
It’s not uncommon for children  not to know what the job of their parents is (entails). What a loss.

Looking down – these look like tulips … love pristine white and their pointed shape at ends

We didn’t see flowers in the Openlucht Museum, but plenty in Hortus, Botannical Garden in Groningen,
3 hours North from here.

  1. The museum and weaving are interesting! I love the reflections around the boat. Ice Cream sounds yummy and the tulips are pretty. Lovely series, have a happy week!

  2. Beautiful pictures of a beautiful place. Did you know that Audrey Hepburn was born in this town and lived there during ww II? Her brothers were forced to fight for the Germans and she was a part of the Dutch underground resistance movement. I read a very interesting biography on her a few years back.

  3. The blacksmith looks just like he escaped from a Tolkien novel… ^^ Great serie ; I like very much all those ancient craft art too.

  4. Seeing these people on the job is fascinating…

The missing boat worker might be jobless if they don’t get back to work though…(((winkwink)))

Things do seem a lot more impersonal nowadays… I can just imagine how much more joyful things would be if people took a little more time getting to know one another.

Thanks for linking to the letter “J”.
